The Art of Layering
Summer is over and Vancouver is just starting to feel a little bit chilly. According to this year’s forecast - and thanks to global warming- this winter is going to be the coldest one yet and I’m not ready for it.
I’m a tropical gal from Mexico who suffers every winter in cold cities like Vancouver - and I know there are way more frosty cities- but nonetheless, Vancouver has been the coldest one yet for me and my trick for surviving the most chilly days here, has been learning how to layer.
There are 3 important things to accomplish: one, I want to look pretty; two, stay warm; and three, do not -by any reason- look bulky. So I learned that the trick is to use thin layers of clothes.
My first layer is a tank top. Now, I know we all want to feel comfortable so I recommend to choose a fabric like cotton or -even better- Uniqlo Heattech Bra Sleeveless Top. It is extremely warm but also breathable and it gives you the support and form you’ll want to achieve.
I switched the cozy sweater for a wool-blend blazer
For my second layer, I go with a scoop or crew neck long-sleeve t-shirt. Again, Uniqlo has an ultra warm and soft option, but I know Muji also has good options. I’ll suggest to choose nude colours on the first two layers so that you can wear them with everything.
My third layer is a sweater. Here’s where we go crazy! So, choose your favourite sweater and go look fabulous.
We obviously have a last layer, which is your jacket or coat. For me, it definitely depends on both the outfit and the weather outside. My 3 favourite ones are my teddy bear coat from Bimba Y Lola -you are going to see a lot of this one in here-, a pale yellow Joseph coat that has a blend of silk and wool, this makes it light but very warm and last, a black Maje jacket that can be used from both sides.
Let’s get creative and stay warm!
